How to use the Mundane Chest in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Chest of the Mundane is meant to be a decoy. The magic on this chest turns any items placed in it into ordinary and mundane items. This is meant to deter any would-be thieves from stealing the items inside.

When it comes to the Chest of the Mundane, all you need to do is remove the items inside and they will revert to their true form. Many have reported getting the following items from the chest:

  • Scroll of Protection from Good and Evil
  • Gold Ingot
  • Scroll of Mage Armour
  • Mystra’s Grace Boots
  • Hearthlight Bomb
  • Potions

There are plenty of magical items that you can get from the Mundane Chest just by seeing past the disguise and grabbing all of the items within. The items are great for any class, including warlocks and wizards especially.

This chest isn’t nearly as difficult to open as the Gilded Chest earlier in the game. If you want to reach the chest easily, be sure to have Misty Step prepared. This will help you get through the entrance and the first floor of the tower.

Astarion is a good ally to have thanks to his ability to sneak around the Arcane Turrets in the area. Throughout the tower, there are some hints about its owner and origins as well.

The Chest of the Mundane is located in the Arcane Tower in the Underdark. Luckily, you don’t need to go through too much to reach it. You will know when you are near the Arcane Tower because there are two Arcane turrets blocking it. You can use Sussur Blossoms to shut down the turrets both outside and inside the tower. You can also have a party member use a lightning spell.

The door to the tower has a lock that you can have your rogue use lockpicks on. Luckily, the check required is not very difficult to make and shouldn’t be an issue.

Once you are inside, you can find the Chest of the Mundane by going through the balcony door. There is an elevator in the Arcane Tower that requires you to jump down the tower to activate. Doing this part of the quest will also get you Timmask Spores, hammer, dagger, a dusty book or two, Tongues of Madness, and other rewards. Those who use the elevator button to ascend to the highest floor will meet Bernard.
