There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to RPGs. You can choose which gameplay you like the best, which RPG is available on your desired platform, and more.

Because there’s so much competition, the best will rise to the top. Right now, it’s a tough decision for gamers between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4, both behemoths in the genre. They both have their positives and negatives, and similarities and differences.

Which one should you pick? How are Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4 similar and different? Let’s look at Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4 to see how they compare.

How are Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4 similar?

Badlur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4 are both RPG video games that let you explore an open world with endless choices and possibilities.

In each game, you can create a character and choose a class to play as, which affects your gameplay and how you build your character. The two games actually share three classes:

All three of these classes appear in both Diablo 4 and Baldur’s Gate. There are subclasses available in those classes, to further decide your character’s fighting style and what moves and spells they use.

You will fight both monsters and humans in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realm from Dungeons & Dragons in Baldur’s Gate 3, and the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary in Diablo 4. These are both open-world settings that allow you to explore and quest at your own pace to decide your own journey and exploration, and both allow you to do this in co-op mode with friends.

You’ll be following both main story quests and sidequests in both games to reach the end, and fighting through classic dungeons in a fantasy setting while gaining levels and becoming stronger.

How are Baldur’s Gate 3 and Diablo 4 different?

While there are plenty of similarities to be found in the games, such as the class system and making a playable hero to play through a fantasy storyline, the games are actually quite different.

For starters, the games were made by different studios. Baldur’s Gate 3 was developed by Larian Studios and released this August, while Diablo 4 was made by Blizzard.

Gameplay-wise, the games vary wildly when it comes to combat. While both allow you to alter your fighting style depending on your class, Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based combat like Divinity Original Sin, where each character has action points or AP, that are used each turn. This combat system allows players to decide each move carefully, and make decisions for party members as well. You’ll have companions join you on your journey, and they are essential to gameplay.

Diablo 4, on the other hand, uses real-time combat where enemies are constantly attacking, at the same time you are attacking them. You have to think fast and attack quickly, or else survival will be difficult. These different combat systems are a huge difference in the games, as combat is one of the main aspects of both RPGs.

You’ll also be completely on your own in Diablo 4 unless you join a party or clan, which is made up of real players instead of NPCs who follow you around.

Another difference is in the fantasy worlds; Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place in the Forgotten Realms, a much brighter world than the eerie, post-apocalyptic setting of Sanctuary in Diablo 4, which although still a fantasy world, is much bleaker. The graphics are both similarly impressive, but the designs of the fantasy worlds are very different.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 or Diablo 4 better?

The only one who can decide which game is better is yourself. Everyone has different tastes, and depending on whether you prefer more in-depth appearance customization or a darker storyline for your playthrough can determine which game you prefer.

Both games have been loved by critics and players alike, so it really comes down to personal preference.
